Finding an English Speaking Dentist in Prague
How registration, health insurance and private fees work at Czech dental practices, what to ask before treatment, and what to do in a dental emergency.
Finding a dentist (zubař, zubní lékař) who explains your options clearly in English makes it much easier to decide on treatment — and understand the cost.
This guide is general information, not medical advice.
Registered patient or one-off visit?
Many people in the Czech Republic are registered (registrovaný pacient) with a dentist they see for regular check-ups. Some practices are not accepting new registered patients, while others offer one-off or private treatment. When you contact a practice, ask:
- Are you accepting new patients?
- Do you have a contract with my health insurer?
Insurance and costs
If you are in the Czech public health insurance system, some dental treatment is covered and some is paid directly. Practices usually have a price list (ceník) for treatments that are not fully covered — ask to see it.
If you have private or commercial health insurance, check what dental treatment your policy covers and whether you pay first and claim the cost back.
For larger work — crowns, implants, orthodontics — ask for a written treatment plan with costs before you agree.
Questions to ask at the first appointment
- What do you recommend, and what are the alternatives?
- Which parts are covered by my insurance, and what will I pay?
- Is there anything that can wait, and what happens if I wait?
- Can I have the treatment plan and costs in writing?
Dental emergencies
For severe pain, swelling or an injury outside your dentist's hours, Prague has emergency dental services (zubní pohotovost). Check the current address and hours before you need them, as they can change. For serious facial injuries, swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or heavy bleeding, call 155 or 112.
Checking a dentist
Dentists practising in the Czech Republic are members of the Czech Dental Chamber (Česká stomatologická komora).
