Hiring doctors and clinics in Prague

In the Czech system, your general practitioner (praktický lékař) is usually your first point of contact and refers you to specialists.

What to consider when choosing a doctor or clinic

  • Registration. Ask whether the doctor is accepting new registered patients, and whether they have a contract with your health insurer.
  • Private clinics. Some clinics work mainly with private or commercial insurance, or charge directly. Ask how payment and invoices work.
  • Bring documents. Your insurance card, ID and any previous medical reports (translated if possible) help the first appointment go smoothly.
  • Emergencies. Call 155 or 112 in an emergency.
