Hiring plumbers in Prague

A good plumber (instalatér) can save you a lot of stress — and in older Prague buildings, a lot of water damage. Here is what to think about before you book one.

What to consider when hiring a plumber

  • Is it an emergency? If water is leaking, close the main water valve (hlavní uzávěr vody) first. In most flats it is near the water meter, often in the bathroom, kitchen or a hallway cupboard.
  • Who is responsible? In a rented flat, contact your landlord or building manager before arranging work. Shared pipes (risers) are usually the building's responsibility.
  • Ask about the call-out fee. Many plumbers charge for travel (výjezd) separately from labour. Out-of-hours and weekend rates are often higher.
  • Get the price in writing. A message or email with the estimated price is enough. Ask for an invoice (faktura) or receipt when the job is done.
