What to consider when calling a locksmith

• Agree the total price before they start. Ask for the call-out fee, the price for opening the door, and the price of any replacement lock. Night and weekend rates are often higher.
• Expect to prove you live there. Reputable locksmiths ask for ID or another document linking you to the address. That protects you too.
• Ask whether the door can be opened without damage. Many standard locks can be opened without drilling; ask before they drill.
• Renting? Tell your landlord, and keep the receipt if a lock is replaced.
