Locked Out in Prague? What to Do and How to Choose a Locksmith
What to do in the first ten minutes, how to avoid surprise emergency charges, and what a reputable locksmith will ask you before opening the door.
Being locked out is stressful, often happens at night, and is exactly the moment when it is easiest to agree to a price you would never accept otherwise. A little preparation helps.
Before you call a locksmith
- Is anyone else a key holder? A flatmate, partner, landlord or building manager may have a spare key. Many landlords keep one.
- Is it only the door that slammed shut? Many Prague doors lock automatically when closed (zabouchnuté dveře), which is often easier to open than a door locked with a key.
- Is someone in danger? If a child, a vulnerable person, or a hob or iron is left on inside, call 112.
Choosing a locksmith
Search engines are full of "24/7 locksmith" adverts, and not all of them are local businesses. Look for:
- A clear business identity. A company name and IČO (company ID) you can check in the ARES register.
- Confirmation from real customers that they were served in English — shown on locksmith listings in this directory.
- A willingness to give a price on the phone.
What to ask before they set off
- What is the total price to open the door? Ask for the call-out fee (výjezd), the opening fee, and any night or weekend surcharge separately.
- Will you try to open it without damage? Ask before they drill.
- If the lock must be replaced, what does a new cylinder (vložka) cost?
- How long until you arrive?
- Can I pay by card, and will I get a receipt?
Write the price down or ask them to confirm it by text message.
What a reputable locksmith will ask you
Expect to show ID and something that links you to the address — a lease, a utility bill, or a neighbour or building manager who can vouch for you. It may feel awkward when you just want to get in, but it protects you from someone else doing the same to your door.
After the door is open
- Check the invoice matches the agreed price.
- If the lock was changed in a rented flat, tell your landlord and give them a spare key if your lease requires it.
- Consider leaving a spare key with someone you trust.
