A strange noise is hard enough to describe in your own language. With a little preparation, you can get an accurate diagnosis — and avoid surprises on the bill — even if you do not speak Czech.

Before you go to the garage

Write down the answers to these questions:

  • What happens? A noise, a vibration, a smell, a warning light, poor starting, a pull to one side?
  • When does it happen? When the engine is cold, when braking, when turning, at a particular speed?
  • Since when? Did it start suddenly or gradually? After an event, like a pothole or a service?

Then record evidence: a short video with sound, a photo of the dashboard warning light, and photos of any leaks under the car.

At the garage

  • Show, don't tell. Play the video and point to the warning light photo.
  • Ask what they will check first and what the diagnosis will cost.
  • Agree how extra work is approved. Ask them to call or message you with a price before doing anything beyond the agreed job. Ask them to note this on the job order (zakázkový list).
  • Ask for the old parts back. It is a normal request.

Questions to ask before approving a repair

  1. What exactly is wrong, and what happens if I don't fix it now?
  2. What will it cost in total, including parts, labour and VAT (DPH)?
  3. Are you using original (originální) or equivalent (neoriginální) parts?
  4. Is there a warranty (záruka) on the repair?
  5. When will the car be ready?

Technical inspection (STK)

Cars registered in the Czech Republic must pass periodic technical inspections at a stanice technické kontroly (STK), which include an emissions check. Many garages offer to prepare the car beforehand. Check the date of your next inspection in the vehicle documents.
